Arrhythmia refers to any abnormality in the heart's rhythm — whether the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly. While some arrhythmias are harmless, others can significantly impair cardiac function and increase the risk of stroke, heart failure, or sudden cardiac arrest. The heart's electrical system coordinates each heartbeat through a series of precisely timed signals. When this system malfunctions, arrhythmias result. The most common type is atrial fibrillation (AFib), in which the upper chambers of the heart quiver chaotically instead of contracting effectively. AFib affects more than 33 million people worldwide and substantially increases the risk of stroke and heart failure. Symptoms include palpitations, fatigue, shortness of breath, and dizziness, though many patients have no symptoms at all. Ventricular arrhythmias are generally more serious. Ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a rapid heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers, which can lead to ventricular fibrillation (VF) — a life-threatening condition where the heart quivers rather than pumps. Bradyarrhythmias, where the heart beats too slowly, can cause fainting, fatigue, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest. Diagnosis involves electrocardiography (EKG), Holter monitoring, electrophysiology studies, and wearable cardiac monitors. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the arrhythmia and may include antiarrhythmic medications, blood thinners to reduce stroke risk in AFib, catheter ablation (a minimally invasive procedure that destroys the tissue causing abnormal signals), or implantable devices such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs).
