Endocrinology is the medical specialty focused on the endocrine system — the network of glands and organs that produce, store, and secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. Hormones regulate virtually every bodily process: metabolism, growth, sexual function, sleep, mood, and response to stress. Endocrinologists diagnose and manage a wide array of hormonal and metabolic disorders. Diabetes mellitus is the most prevalent endocrine condition — affecting approximately 37 million Americans (11.3% of the population), with an additional 96 million adults having prediabetes. Endocrinologists manage the complexity of type 1 and type 2 diabetes: insulin therapy optimization, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) interpretation, closed-loop insulin delivery systems (artificial pancreas), and management of complications including diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy. GLP-1 receptor agonists (semaglutide, tirzepatide) have emerged as transformative agents for both glycemic control and weight management. Thyroid disorders — including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer — represent a high volume of endocrine practice. Adrenal disorders include Cushing's syndrome (cortisol excess), Addison's disease (adrenal insufficiency), primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn's syndrome), and pheochromocytoma. Pituitary disorders — growth hormone deficiency, acromegaly, prolactinoma, Cushing's disease, and diabetes insipidus — require sophisticated hormonal evaluation and often collaboration with neurosurgery. Osteoporosis affects 10 million Americans, predominantly postmenopausal women. Endocrinologists assess bone mineral density, fracture risk (FRAX), and prescribe antiresorptive (bisphosphonates, denosumab) or anabolic (teriparatide, romosozumab) therapies.
