About Pediatrics

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that provides comprehensive medical care for infants, children, and adolescents from birth through late adolescence (typically age 18–21). Pediatricians are uniquely trained to understand the physical, emotional, social, and developmental stages of childhood — recognizing that children are not simply small adults but have distinct physiological characteristics, disease presentations, and psychological needs. Preventive care and well-child visits are the foundation of pediatric practice. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends scheduled visits from newborn through adolescence to monitor growth and development, administer vaccines, screen for developmental delays and behavioral health conditions, and provide anticipatory guidance to parents. The childhood vaccine schedule prevents millions of cases of serious infectious disease annually. Developmental pediatrics addresses neurodevelopmental conditions including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, and speech/language delays. Early identification through developmental screening at well visits enables timely intervention through early childhood programs, behavioral therapy, speech therapy, and educational support. Common acute illnesses managed by pediatricians include respiratory infections, otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, urinary tract infections, and gastroenteritis. Pediatric asthma management, eczema, and allergic conditions require ongoing monitoring and parental education. Adolescent medicine addresses puberty, reproductive health, eating disorders (affecting up to 4% of adolescents), sports medicine, substance use, and mental health — areas where developmentally sensitive, confidential care is critical. Obesity screening and management using family-based behavioral interventions have become increasingly important. Pediatric subspecialties — pediatric cardiology, neurology, oncology, endocrinology, infectious disease, rheumatology, and surgery — manage complex conditions requiring specialized expertise in the context of a growing child.
