Our consultant general surgeons are trained to manage both elective and emergency surgical presentations with precision, safety, and a strong commitment to patient-centred care. Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is the default approach for the majority of general surgical procedures, including appendicectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia repair, and anti-reflux surgery. Minimally invasive techniques result in smaller incisions, reduced post-operative pain, lower infection risk, shorter hospital stays, and quicker return to normal activities compared to open surgery. Colorectal surgery is a major component of our general surgery practice. We manage conditions including colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease requiring surgery, and rectal prolapse. Laparoscopic and robotic-assisted colorectal resections are performed by sub-specialty trained colorectal surgeons, with enhanced recovery protocols minimising the physiological impact of major bowel surgery. Upper gastrointestinal surgery covers oesophageal, gastric, and hepatobiliary conditions. Procedures including oesophagectomy, gastrectomy, Whipple pancreaticoduodenectomy, and hepatic resections are undertaken by specialist upper GI surgeons with intensive care support. Our multidisciplinary upper GI tumour board reviews all cancer cases before surgery, ensuring every patient benefits from the collective expertise of surgeons, oncologists, and radiologists. Emergency general surgery — appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, perforated viscus, bowel obstruction, and abdominal trauma — is managed around the clock by our on-call surgical team. Rapid assessment, early imaging, and timely operative intervention minimise complications and improve outcomes for patients presenting with acute abdominal emergencies.
